Rear axle relocate notes -- SPG spring height Posted by Landjet [Email] (#16) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Landjet) on Sat, 11 Aug 2012 18:34:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've built the hardware for axle relocate, and assisted on installation, but never was curious enough to focus on the details until the shop I use got a new whizzbang laser alignment machine. So, here are some details that I thought were important to share.
1) When turning the trailing arm pivots around, there is an exposed rivet from inside the car -- it holds the nutplate for the bolts that go through the body clamping up the pivot. When the offset pivot is turned around, there isn't a relief area for the end of the rivet to extend within, so you have to grind the bottom of the rivet off in order for the pivot to sit flush on the body.
2) SPG ( Sport ) chassis setting. Since the springs are shorter, the panhard bar is too long. We built an adjustable panhard bar that can be adjusted to the shorter length.
We set the chassis on the alignment machine and got the rear axle to show within spec, but there the left and right axle settings were wonky -- this is without the panhard bar installed.
After putting the panhard bar in with null adjustment so the bolts could be installed with no interference, I thought about twisting the rod to push the body left or right to see if there was a change in the settings reported on the screen...amazing.....the panhard bar was able to adjust the settings of the rear geometry and they fell into the "green" area. It even surprised the chassis tech at first.
Just goes to show you that "it's the math".....
I realize that some of this is esoteric to most people, but though it was important to record the discovery, or later on, I'll forget this for sure.
