No, just the effect of being able to center the axle in the wheel well really clears things up for wheels/tires. I have 215s on 7" wide wheels and a pretty high offset wheel and still have no rubbing problems ever. Very much worth the price of admission.
I too thought about shimming out the links, but the stud on the wheel bearing housing isn't very long - you couldn't gain much clearance and you'd have the body/gas tank to contend with. I have no idea (mechanically) about how it would work, but putting a slight bend in the link might be a way to gain some clearance as well. It would make building them quite a bit harder, though. ;) Or, possibly replacing them with flat stock instead of tubular (although strength *might* be an issue).
