Just my opinion, but if the valves got piston bumped from the head being shaved too much, I would think your compression numbers would really be low.
Take the black bolt out and take a look at it -- I don't think you have to remove it all the way, but I have before. When I took it all the way out, I recall the oil shooting out and "lobbing" a volley of bursts of oil out the hole, ie the "mess"......
If you pick the furthest point from the oil pump, then oil would be distributed to the other areas. Like I said before, #4 on the intake side -- seems that is the longest distance from the pump.
