I just lay the wire bundle through the trunk opening, and have, for the past 6 years, not damaged the cord at all. That way I can tuck it away i the spare tire area when I am not using it.
If you've got the harness that attaches to the side of the hitch (cool!!), and you want a permanent solution, just drill a hole through the belly of the spare tire area, and put some kinda grommet around it so the rough metal doesn't cut the wires over time...and no water will get in.
It aint like these cars are worth 30K and that one hole will destroy its value.
