Painting the door panels to match the new leather helps Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Mon, 5 Nov 2012 07:11:37 In Reply to: Re: Totally disagree with Glen On Saabstuff Appearance, Glen, Fri, 2 Nov 2012 15:39:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I suspect it will always be hard to match the door panels and seats, since the door panels get faded by the sun (particularly in a vert). This the reason for painting mine - not too hard to do and only costs about $100 to do right. In fact even when the color match is spot-on, the way the light plays off the leather and the door panels makes different parts of the panel appear to be a different shade than the leather. And, well old is old and new is new, so it is a good idea to go all in and rejuvenate the entire interior if you love your car and are going to invest in new leather.
The other issue with fading, which is particularly bad on the the gray seats/vinyl is that the vinyl invariably fades to a purple tint, which against the green tint of my charcoal gray looks very odd. Thus, I'd accepted the task of repainting the door panels as soon as I decided that I wanted the new leather. As long as the basic pigmentation of the two is the same, the results can be very pleasing.
As far as the wrinkles go, I discovered (while doing the back seats) that re-using the wires from the original skins and attaching the nylon cord that the Saabstuff skins come with for tie downs, works better than simply attaching the hooks in the same fashion/location as the original seats were attached.
As I noted, I don't believe the issue with the Saabstuff skins is with the product, rather it is with the installer (neither Jon nor I are pros).
