I'd guess the vacuum switch by the brake/clutch is worn out. The switch is similar to the brake light switch. It can be adjusted, but in my experience the plastic switch just wears and doesn't keep the cruise engaged even after readjusting, so needs replaced. Do a search on this board for cruise control switch, there's probably some detailed info. Its a pain to see this switch, you need to get your head up by the pedals, and even then its tough to see and get at, but you should be able to get a hand or screw driver up there to try readjusting (but you'll need to sit in your car like an astronaut in an Apollo module). If that fixes it, great. But if it recurs, the switch should be replaced. When I need to get back there, I drop the knee bolster and remove the drivers seat, which makes this a one day project, but reduces the body contortions.
Or you could have a bad vacuum line, but it doesn't sound like it.
