ask JonH says you may have defective unit. Or you may have extended it too far to get the pressure plate to engage and blown out the O ring. I've done that and it's a surprise. Somewhere I read about it after the fact and cautioning one to be careful. Did you have the flywheel resurfaced? was it near the limit? that can cause the pressure plate to be a tad further from the slave cylinder mount and make it touchy on removing the ring that locks out the pressure plate. I ended up putting vice grips on the part of the locking ring that sticks out and yanking on it to get it closer to the center and the fingers closer to the slave.
as to the HARD plastic ring vs the rubber bellows with spring inside, the first is the old (really old) style, and the other is the newer one. the new one does an automatic job (the spring) of keeping the release bearing against the fingers on the pressure plate.
