Some thoughts: If it's just the same as the C900 slaves on late 80s up, which I think is so, what you describe is a replacemet with a rubber boot with internal spring, meant as a dust shield, where the factory ones even on the 88-89s I have dealt with had a hard plastic knurled-looking sleeve, that was kind of pressed on the slave. I believe that hard plastic sleeve can be removed from the old one and used on newer replacements instead of the rubber dust shield. Or, use rubber shield. Makes no difference.
"Then," you say, "a sleeve with a bearing in it." That sounds to me like the throwout bearing, or release bearing, which pushes against the fingers in center of pressure plate to release it. You need one on your new cylinder, either re-using the old one, re-using it after working some oil into its bearing, or, as most people do, buying a brand new one, because they do wear and you don't want yours wearing out.
If you didn't install a release bearing it might I guess be possible for the slave to push its center sleeve, the actual piston of the cylinder I guess you could call it, too far, letting fluid leak out. If that's happened you can remove it, clean it all up and gently twist and push it back together, and try again.
Another possibility for massive fluid leak is if you didn't get the three bolts that hold the slave cylinder to the tranny screwed in all the way.
If those screws are loose, the back of the slave cylinder can push back as you put the pressure on it, and go past the seal and let fluid gush out there. Also fixable by gentle reassembly.
What brand slave cylinder are you using, and where did you get it? There aren't many reports of defects on here.
