Time to let my Geek flag fly. See the attached picture of my custom heatsink arrangement and Peltier cooler for the ABS pressure accumulator. I built this for about $25-30 using old computer parts and ordering the Peltier cooler from the vendor on the Yellow piece of paper in the photo. The fan set-up came from an old P3 computer.
I first made a cast using JB Weld putty (cutting it square). Then, I made a mold using plaster of paris. After letting the mold set overnight, I baked it for an hour at 400 degrees to get rid of all the moisture. Then, I melted aluminum in a 2" pipe end cap I used for a crucible in my gas grill and supplementing extra heat using a torch. After pouring the mold, I filed it flat, and assembled it using heat sink paste to maximize the thermal efficiency
.
I am very pleased with the results - it gets cold enough to cause condensation on the "bomb". Right now it is wired into the fog light circuit for switch power. Later on I'll hook it up to a switch of its own. Can't wait to try it out.
There's been a bit of chatter over the years about the ABS "bomb: (aka the Pressure accumulator) overheating on hot, humid summer days. This condition causes the pedal to go rock hard and is a safety issue since you are usually sitting in bumper to bumper traffic when the condition presents itself.
I've generally handled this by keeping an old sock over it that I douse with water to cool it down and restore normal brake pressure. The problem is you have to pull over and lift the hood to do this. I thought about putting a wiper nozzle/pump on a switch, but this seemed to be a problem given all the electric connections. This solves this. Once and for all.
