The Subaru is a 2 owner car. I've no idea what oil the original owner ran, however I know it was 100% leak free. We operated it for almost 1.5 years, still leak free, then I converted it to Mobil 1. My previous oil was 5W30, as was the Mobil 1 (a partial synthetic, as you pointed out). The leakage began the same week that the oil was changed.

Another internet story? Nope, just an ugly fact. So I've got this data point, and no more info, yet. However, next change I will convert back to Castrol 5W30. We shall see if the leakage stops, lessons, or remains the same.

I've never bought the old "shrinking seal" theory. I know seals don't grow back either. Deposits/films which are at the seal contact surface being washed off however, do make sense.

I've heard from a couple guys on the Volvo forum that Mobil1 isn't what it used to be. The WM price is nice, locally here at $23 for 5 qts. They also offer a guaranteed 15K mile synthetic for a few bucks more, is around $26.

I will do some web recon.and see what facts/studies are out there on the NEW Mobil 1.
