The tail light was the culprit. Well, not the culprit, but the source of the problem. The culprit was sleep deprivation.
Last time I replaced the right side brake light was on a Friday at the end of a week of extreme sleep deprivation. In one week I had had about 15 hours of sleep, and I was pooped by Friday.
Two days ago I pulled out the right side tail light cover and immediately found the problem: where a double filament light should have been I had a single filament! So when I pressed the brakes my energy escaped to the headlights, and none of my brake lights (even the left side with the proper bulbs) lit up.
Once I installed a correct 5 Watt/21 Watt double filament light bulb in there all my troubles were gone.
So the moral of the story is, don't work on your car when extremely tired!!!
