The oil in the final drive will heat up and create some pressure in use. If that pressure isn't vented it will force it's way out through a seal or gasket and take oil along with it. Only air should come out of the vent, that's why it's at the top of the cover. Did you fill the final drive through the filler hole on the passenger side that has the square drive plug? The standard procedure is to fill through that hole until the level is up to the hole (with the car level of course). I'd recommend that you remove the plug and see if oil runs out. You can use either gear oil or motor oil in the final drive of the T37 because it has center-line not hypoid design so lower shear pressure. Gear oil is not recommended for the five speed because it's oil lubricates the entire transaxle, not just the final drive. Gear oils are often not kind to bronze components and don't splash around as well as motor oil and the five speed is heavily reliant on splash lubrication.
