James,
the heat energy transfer - from the cat to the ambient air - is a function of the difference in temperatures: the more the difference, the more intensive the transfer. But do you really think that going from 420K to 480K will significantly intensify the transfer so that you can live w/o the heat shield? (assuming summer ambient temperature to be 30C and winter temperature to be -30C and the cat temperature to be 450C which is a good assumption; cat operating temperature range is 300C-800C and you're a canuck which are known for being quite calm and you never posted any speeding ticket stories so I presume your cat temperature to fluctuate somewhere in the lower region of the operating range)
Ok-ok, this isn't a question of the cat body temperature, but a question of temperature of a piece of metal which is 2-3cm away from the cat so the temperature delta will be a bit less. How much? I dunno, but I wouldn't be that curious to try such experiment on my own car. And unless you weld the shield to or rivet it onto the floor panel, you can always take it off if you decide to use it on another car.
