yeah, it is the sun and heat. I'm in central Canada so while very cold from now until 6 months from now, our summers are actually quite hot and sunny. Until recently, I had one dash with 3 small cracks and one dash that was perfect. Both cars are garaged a fair bit. The one that was perfect came from the east cost and had been garaged. So my suggestion, find one from a place that rains a lot (east/west cost) and not too hot. Conveniently, these are the same places which tend to rust cars out the most, so you might have luck calling junkyards in those parts.
Unfortunately, the reality is that once you actually use the car in a place that is sunny, it will start to crack. My 3 crack car is now 6 cracks, and the perfect dash now has a couple of tiny cracks forming. I garage the cars as much as possible and use a reflective screen when I can't. This all helps, but still it is a hopeless endeavour. Find one that is not too bad and repair it imho! And thank yourself that dash cracks are all you are concerned about and not rust! Dash cracks are waaaaay down on my list of priorities. Stupid salt!
