After hooking up a modified garden hose to both valves, the SAAB OEM plastic valve out performed the old metal valve.
The SAAB valve worked perfect with the water supply hooked to the lower port. When the heat was off, it recirculated the water out through the top port. With the heat on it sent water to the heater core. There were no leaks.
The metal valve had water spewing everywhere but the temperature rod. This valve is a good candidate to be dissected. I suspect the internals have significant corrosion causing the water to take the path of least resistance.
We'll see how the valve performs with hot coolant.
