I'm not sure what constitutes a good value, as they are kind of all over the map in terms of condition and price. It is true that the best cars are generally now appreciating significantly in value. It is getting harder to find a nice one for sale. People are mostly keeping them.
I think the #1 thing in terms of valuation would be condition in terms of rust and paint. A rust free body with 100% original paint in good condition with all kinds of mechanical issues to fix would be worth a lot more to me than a car that runs perfect, even perfect interior, but has rust... so much work to fix rust properly or you are in a never ending cycle of repairs. I'm pretty much of the opinion that the only way to get a really good repaint is to go to the lengths of Jon and that is just not feasible for me either in terms of my time, or the cost of someone else's time...
It is usually possible to sort a car out well mechanically without removing too much from the car, and often this can be done piecewise step by step while still driving it. I think if it is truly rust free (look under the carpets!!) and just has faded paint and a cracked dash, if the tranny is good and the car is mostly right, that's not far off reasonable for an SPG. They aren't making them anymore and they are getting used up faster than the verts. The SPG will be the classic that appreciates the most in value. For sure!
