with this kind of spring compressor: Once you get to the point that the spring is compressed enough to lift off the spring seat, remove the bolt that holds the spring seat to the upper control arm and slide the seat off. That minimizes the amount of energy stored in the spring (there's still enough for it to be dangerous) and makes it a bit easier to heft the spring and compressors around.
I've used this method a few times.
