Congratulations, Jon, and good work on the posts. I like the kind of how-to that goes through all the steps, and especially the nut and bolt head sizes. Why for the life of good the usual shop manuals don't do this I don't know. The ones based on a tear-down HAD to figure out thejmselves what wrenches to use; why make someone else go through it? This extends to little tricks, such as using long extensions, where to place wrench, when it has to go a flat at a time, etc.
The couple of times I've replaced C900 starters, I've taken a look and thought, 'What is this BS for? No other make does this.'
So I have left the starter-rear-to-block bracket completely off, and on that annoying tube-strut down from the manifold, I have clamped the nut end in a vise and hacksawed off the tube, so it's not in the way.
No undue movement or vibration from the starter, and no loosening, or intake leaks, from the manifold. Next time in, if iever, it will be a lot easier.
