My deference to the Saab gods only goes so far.

Sure, Jon, they designed some good things, but there are points on the wisdom of which I choose to differ with them.
Chiefest among them being, the absurdity of the design of the ignition key location, decades after experience, on the first few years of the 99 (or does it go further back?), must have showed that it leads to great trouble, in some careless customers' hands of course, with food and drink sticking up the works. Even just redesigning the center console tray surrounding it, so the keyhole wasn't at the lowest point and maybe adding a drain out the bottom for dirt and liquids to exit, seems to cry out to be done, but I guess it fell on deaf ears.
As to the starter brace, never saw one on any other make or model of car, nor have I seen cars with shorter starter life because of lack of such a brace. As to the intake manifold strut, never saw such a thing on other makes and not on the 9000 or I believe later Saab 4 cyls.
Generally I'm a purist when in comes to original fasteners and full reassembly instead of leaving things out the way many garage mechanics seem to.
Saab did indeed do lots of things right. One I like is, the rubber hoses, belts, rubber bushings, etc., all seem to be of extra high quality even for OEM parts and there are many of these cars well past 30 years old with lots of such items still the originals. I won't replace these things with aftermarket until they either go bad or show real signs of deteriorating. Most non-Saab replacements are junk compared to the OEM.
