Convertible top - valve in trunk - which way?

I'm trying to diagnose my convertible top issues. The prior owner had it set to manually raise and lower. I hear activity when I try the motor (parking brake on, etc). But I'd like to see if it actually works, needs fluid, whatever.
I know the valve in the trunk needs to be turned for automatic operation. I forget which way. I did try turning it counter-clockwise, and it kept turning and turning. I don't remember it doing that in my other cars. Same for clockwise. I thought it would only go so far and then stop turning?
