Shifting into reverse was the deciding factor for me (back when I was living with the soft clutch problem as it progressed to worse).
Forward gears were sticky but negotiable. Reverse gear was a crunch for one or two times (with me cursing and grimacing in the driver's seat).
And then I grew really good at moving the gear shift into position, just about to go into reverse, when I could just faintly feel the gears not meshing. And I would then shut the engine off, shift into reverse, then start up the engine and probably find myself already barely moving in reverse because of the failing slave.
About ten days of this before a new slave cured the problem.
