I'm beginning to wonder if I'm using the wrong name for the component I'm referring to . I'm referring to the rod that is about a foot long , three quarters of an inch or so in diameter and attaches at one end just above the brake caliper and the other at the back of the wheel well near the trunk . Judging by the responses I'm receiving it almost sounds like people are referring to the large beam type structure with the coil spring and shock absorber in it which I thought was called the rear control arm . This thing that I'm calling the rear control arm appears to have most of if not all the responsibility for controlling the rear axle and keeping it in place considering its very robust structure and very heavy mountings . The component which I was originally referring to and calling the trailing arm is so much less robust that it only appears to have a secondary handling purpose and if disconnected might affect handling in a secondary way but not cause structural damage or create a blatant safety issue . Given its size , mountings and positioning it really doesn't appear to bear much of the job of keeping the axle in place . I didn't get back to this post right away because of work so I hope if I got my terminology wrong people will let me know because right now I can't see the structure I was originally referring to as having a catastrophic effect by being disconnected . Driving at least 10 miles with no noticeable effect seems to be some proof of this .
