Yeah, it's dangerous, but from what I've read not *that* dangerous. There has always been this big OH NOES! reaction to hydrocarbon based refrigerants that has always been the "reason" to use the proper stuff. However, the reports I've read show that R12, for example, is every bit as flammable as hydrocarbon refrigerants in the same concentrations. With the more recent revelations that R12, R134a, and now R1234yf refrigerants seem to be endorsed based primarily on lobbying from the Dupont Corporation, I think some real doubts are raised as to how dangerous hydrocarbon refrigerants are versus "the right stuff." I suspect - but I'm a college dropout - that in a well ventilated area none of them are terribly dangerous. Hopefully you are not working on a running car in a closed garage anyway. That said, there are environmental concerns when it comes to this type of work - although by all admissions EnviroSafe leaking into the atmosphere is WAY safer than any of the Dupont creations. Related, be sure you post notice on the car that your system is charged with hydrocarbon-based refrigerant, as someone thinking you've got R12 in there could ruin a whole batch of recovered R12 if they ever hooked up to it.
