Canucks and Mordor do nice tricks with those things. Oh, those superseries back to those days!..
Jim,
whatever I look and sound like, I'm not kidding here. Years ago I was in a middle of nowhere and sequentially lost the 1st, the 2nd and finally the reverse gears. It turned out to be that very coupling which went non-coupling. Here in Mordor we used to be egg-heads for years so I managed to fix the thing with a random hockey puck I found around. Just saw it to fit the metal forks (hockey pucks tend to be round, you know; you need it to look like a small brick - just as the original rubber piece) and drill two thru-holes for a couple of M4 bolts (or whatever imperial standard size is close to this; we're metric here in Mordor). If you want to make it perfect, then choose the bolts of just the proper size and couple them with two closed nuts.
Ever since this mod I never even thought about going back to original coupling. Yep, it's a little on the jogging side now cause of more solid joint, but boy it feels precise like AK47 or Lambo Diable thing with those shifter openings if you know what I'm talking about.
Good luck, I'll be back with a photo of my hockey puck in about three weeks.
Zig
