After a 2400 mile roundtrip to take a car to the Utah Salt Flats for the Bonneville speed trials.....on I-80, some 40 miles from Nirvana there was a massive downpour that ended up cancelling the event. After 4 years of planning and construction with many twists and turns, mother nature prevented the running of the 900 turbo.
However, the good news is the car will be better for World Finals in October, and with more time to finish some details, we're hopeful for clear weather so the event won't be cancelled as it was last year as well. It's a longgggggg driveway to Bonneville from here.......
SO !! HELP !!!! Here is the problem I'm back to deal with:
1989 900T -- suspension and steering are tight and no knocks when the car is cold. After it warms up and has run for a period of time, there are knocks and clunks in the steering and over bumps. Nothing like this when it's cold.
I'm suspicious of the rack or the power steering pump.
One thought I had was to take off the power steering pump belt and see if it repeats the issue -- in other words, taking the pump out of the formula. Not sure that it would isolate the problem if somehow the internal operation of the rack is challenged by a pump issue or simply internal to the rack.
This has been very puzzling for several techs that have decades of automotive knowledge, however, not specific Saab 900 knowledge.
Anyone out there have a cold / warm steering clunk issue????
