Thats a nice way of saying they don't want to mess with it. What they really mean is that thread end of the return line is prone to strip the treads out of the rack, which will cost them over 500$ to fix it and lots of labor over a stupid return line blunder. The odds of the treads stripping if someone doesn't take great care on threading the bolt in the rack is about 80%
If your rack is leaking at the return line to rack its the little rubber washer that is on the bolt end of the line. It has turnd to gum and is leaking. (This happened to mine) or your line is cross threaded to the point if removed it will take out the threads stripping them out of the rack. if no one has ever touched the rack your 5cent rubber washer needs replacement.
But think about it. If you owned a shop would you gamble the 80% in trying to fix a 5cent rubber washer.
Getting a used tank isn't a problem, they are every where. I think I've collected 9 over the years by accident. The shop just doesn't want to tell you about the 80% blunder they could be in.
But now for 200$ I'd gamble and take my sweet old time getting it right. The job is about a half an hour. To get the 5 cent washer one needs to buy the entire return line,Eeuro is selling them for like 25$
For the mechanic to state its in the system now makes absolutely no scenes. He may have just been testing the waters in how much you know about cars to put a figure on how much he can milk you for.
