After owning a bunch of C900s since 1990, I ran across a very nice '92T convertible... with an automatic.. this year. I'm pretty happy with it. I had driven my friend's 90T automatic convertible years ago and remember being happy with the crisp shifting auto. I think that he put 200k on the original automatic and it is still going. He changes the oil out with every other oil change on the engine and credits that with keeping it going.
I've read that the BW37-style transmission was used in everything from Studebakers to mail trucks, with some going 400,000 miles between rebuilds. Some folks absolutely hate this transmission.
I can tell you that I'm pretty tuned in to how my C900s run and these warm up very quickly. Seems that the inefficiency of the transmission results in a lot of heat output so maybe these transmissions fail more often in hot climates where the cooling system is more stressed.
The other two negatives are low fuel economy and high revs at high speeds, all discussed here at length in various posts. Saab's published figures for this transmission's ratios are about 33km/h per 1,000 rpm so at 99km/h (approx 60 mph) the engine is turning at 3,000 rpms.
One positive is that I think that these have better parts availability than the manual transmissions. These Borg Warner transmissions were used in so many other cars that parts should remain available for a time.
