The booster can make a noticeable hissing noise when it fails.
You're describing what sounds like failed seals around your master cylinder piston. Air is getting in there and if you pump the pedal, you'll get temporary functional effect.
But air is seeping into the line after a few moments.
I drove a couple of old beater Saabs that had a variation on this back when I was still a teenager. You can get used to it, even drive it around for who knows how long.
But there's that one panic moment where you need instant brakes and suddenly, you're standing on the pedal without sufficient braking effect and your choice to delay repairing/replacing the cylinder suddenly seems ... foolish?
Installing a new cylinder was a remarkable relief.
Cylinders for your year aren't too bad in price. You might even be able to bench bleed the thing and not have to bleed the entire system once the new one is mounted.
Though it could be a good idea to install and skip bleeding if possible but undertake a circuit flush approach to each caliper (essentially bleeding) to flush out old brake fluid.
C'mon, it's a new master cylinder; big deal. The relief you enjoy once fixed will be considerable.
