Based on your description I'd suspect either a worn out first gear balk ring or a clutch hydraulic issue. You say it has a new clutch and that begs the question, could it be bled better? There is always one gear in any unit that is "more sensitive" than the others so if the clutch is not quite fully releasing it can be just that one gear that grinds. You can try pumping the pedal while in neutral when downshifting to first and see if that lets you engage first without grinding. If it works then reverse bleed the clutch to get full action.
