Brett,
RS has an excellent suggestion there regarding the pilot bearing. There's a test for that too: Clear the induction plumbing, remove the clutch shaft cover (3" steel disc at the top, front of the transmission, retained with a giant, horizontal wire clip), unscrew the oil flinger propeller, screw in a bolt and use a wrench to rotate the clutch shaft while the clutch pedal is jammed on the floor. If there is significant drag from a partially seized pilot bearing you'll feel it. Another thing that can cause the same effect is stickiness of the clutch disc on the clutch shaft. If there is drag when rotating the shaft you can pull it out (raise the clutch pedal first) and see if there is rust or lack of lubrication on the splines.
What's getting hurt when your gearbox grinds is the 1-2 slider and first mainshaft gear. The powdered bronze from the balk ring can't make the lubricant work any better either but fortunately it's pretty easy to avoid grinding first gear. I've seen lots of gears and sliders wrecked due to worn out balk rings but don't think I've ever seen that actually destroy an entire unit and can't imagine how it would.
