Very good point re getting Genuine SAAB only on the tstat. The 82 degree fan switch is a wahler. Eeuro carries all this stuff, and the good parts are not that expensive anyway.
Yeah, -20F (-29C) is a pretty normal daytime high in January/February here. I find the 82 degree setup is good for the -30 to -40 range, but we don't really get much worse than that. Battery is more often the problem for me - I really should install block heaters in my cars - it pains me to hear them start in the depths of winter. That said, we don't have outlets in the parking lots at work like out west. Iirc, there used to be an outdoor nighttime beer hockey league in Winnipeg that wouldn't play if the temperature was warmer than -30C... I have friends who visited one of the outposts up north, and they knew it would be cold - brought along their best gear (layers of North Face etc). When they arrived they were laughed at by the locals and given "real" outerwear (sealskin etc). Kind of like when immigrants from Africa or the Carribean show up here in winter with what we would call a "windbreaker"...
Mind you, sometimes with the humidity and wind off the ocean (eg a strong noreaster), the maritime cold can bite as much or more than the dry -40 stuff...
