Starting Issues, Old Beast Won't Always Turn Over

Hello,
I got a real doozy for you. I have a 88 900s that has been a long standing Old Reliable up until recently. It has sat on the side lines until last night. I put it in the garage and went through it, checking all the typical items that wear out. Spark plugs, looking at the timing, etc just to make sure the engine was in working order.
It started up cold, and I turned it off when it reached the operating temperature, or the green portion of the temperature gauge. I turned the engine off and did some cleaning around the head and noticed that the plastic screw on pickup on the distributor was broken where it attaches to the outside of the distributor. I didn't take the thing apart, but from what I could see, the wires were fine and still attached to the innards of the distributor.
I put a wire-tie on to keep the plug in place and put everything back together. I tried to start the engine but it wouldn't turn over. It cranked for a long time. I didn't smell any gas fumes, nor did I hear the fuel pump hum when the key was turned or cranking. I know the pump doesn't always turn on every time the key is turned, as the system is electronically controlled. I did check the fuse service with the ignition on and didn't get any readings.
What do you think could be the issue? It sounds like it could be a fuel issue, which is electronically controlled, but there is at least half dozen components that have a hand in the matter. It might be a temperature issue, or a fuel pressure issue.
