The fuel pump is activated by the ECU, sending voltage to the fuel pump via the fuel pump relay (located next to the main relay on a bracket attached to the ECU in the passenger side footwell). The ECU activates the fuel pump when it receives a signal that the engine is turning over. On my 1988 SPG (LH 2.2) this signal comes from the distributor. I'm not sure if the 1988 900S (LH 2.4) obtains the signal from the distributor or a crank position sensor (by the crankshaft pulley). The Haynes and Bentley manuals have this info, neither of which is handy at the moment.
If your car runs with the fuel pump hot-wired at the fuse box, then pump is obviously good. I also suspect that the "spinning engine" signal is getting to the ECU since the fuel injectors are operating (if ECU didn't get engine timing data, the FIs would stay closed).
So my bet is the fuel pump relay.
good luck.
