Justin's right on.
To hook up a push-button prime switch you want to run a wire tapped into the skinny lilac wire leaving the ECU multiplug, easier to get at than its other end approaching the fuel pump relay. Run that wire to your pushbutton, then run from the other contact of pushbutton to ground somewhere.
My '89's ECU is failing and isn't sending the ground signal to the fuel pump at all so until I find another brain for it I'm doing the slightly risky approach of running a wire straight to ground so fuel pump is running all the time the ignition is on. I hope I don't get into a crash where I'm disabled or knocked out and a fuel line ruptures and there's a source of ignition.
But in the meantime, the car starts fabulous, fires almost as soon as it starts cranking.
The real culprit for your problem is a fuel pressure check valve, back at the tank, that's supposed to hold pressure in the line from your last time running. Can be replaced but at risk of trouble pushing barb into hard nylon fuel line.
