I don't think there's any danger in timing a car to factory spec.
When you time the car, you need to disconnect the hose to the vacuum capsule and plug it. I usually just stick it on the bleeder nipple for the cooling system because that's convenient. You can also stick a golf tee or something in the end of the hose.
Turbo cars are timed to 16 degrees, so what I usually do is mark that degree mark on the flywheel with a little stripe of silver or white paint using a fine-tipped paint marker. I also mark the little timing mark on the flywheel cover. It makes it so much easier to see the marks with the timing light in time.
You can buy a cheapo timing light from Harbour Freight Tools that will do the job. They are not made sturdy enough for someone who times cars for a living, but are fine for the occasional DIYer.
Before you pull your distributor, you can also score a mark on the head where the distributor goes in, corresponding to the mark on the distributor flange--assuming that you car is correctly timed now.
