Before you do anything else have a good look at the shift linkage rubber coupling. If it's split it will open up when you shift into first (and possibly third and fifth). That will prevent full engagement of first gear which can cause it to slip out of gear. You may need to have a friend shift it in and out of first gear while you watch the coupling to see if it spreads open. The most common splits occur where the rubber is bonded to the steel. There are other possible causes but that's the one I would check for first if it was my car.
