Well, you can't say that about SKF anymore that they have nothing but good product, as they have purchased many independent bearing manufacturers, relabel with the SKF brand. I've seen personally the bearings made in France under the SKF flag and they are junk. But, those are unrelated to the wheel bearing situation.
FAG is owned by Schaffler now, and they have a long history of great bearing construction in particular the angular contact variety. Many applications they have of those bearings are used in primary and secondary power turbine applications, so high speed and high load duty. I've seen failures, but they are usually related to the turbine being out of balance and all kinds of other stuff wrong.
So, I wouldn't discount FAG as a good manufacturer for the wheel bearings -- those are all that I have used.
I'll ask around which plant that Timken bought that produces the angular contact application and report back.
Just remember to never ever roll the car around without the axle/axle nuts tight as a drum. I use a big bolt, nut and two different sized thick washers and tighten them up if I ever roll around the car with no axles installed.
