So I am confused...looking at the parts lists on eeuroparts.com it looks like even the 8 valve 87 900 used the 4168 black rotor like the one they sent me, which is used for all of the 900 models that year. So I apparently have the distributor, like roger said, from an 85 8 valve (in 85, all of the 16 valves had 4168 as well). the shaft definitely appears to be larger than what 4168 rotor will fit on.

can you guys please tell me where to look to find the part number on my distributor? can I find that without removing it from the engine?

I'm happy to just get a new 4144 and call it a day, but it would be certainly good to know exactly what engine I have in my car and which distributor...I've been thinking of picking up a spare...can you guys also tell me where to check to tell which engine lives in my car?!
