Chris,
first of all, I'm surprised to hear that your neighbors called police: I've been under an impression that all yankees do the gunfire thing all day long just like canucks playing hockey. Or it's more the Texas-only thing?
Secondly, it's a huge piece of science - and that science is kinda rocket-science! - about designing ground connections and avoiding ground loops. See below:
Так оно на схеме goes for this is how it looks on the scheme (diagram), очень плохо goes for very bad, круголяем где-то по плате goes for humping around here and there over the whole board (PCB, printed circuit board), уже лучше means this one is better, в цепи is to the other circuits, земляная шина is Mordor for elves' ground bus, ещё лучше goes for even more better and finally надо так means that's the way it's got to be.
The example above is more about HF-circuits (high-frequency) where EMI (electro-magnetic interference) is the main concern, but even in the DC (direct current which is sort of AC with frequency = 0) circuits ground connections have to be properly designed. My wild guess goes for either sharing the same ground point for a power (high-current) and signal (feeble or low-current) parts of the wiring loom OR using an engine part which was made of some special material (like magnesium) which has greater electrical resistance for ground connections.
Nevertheless, I like your story!
Zig
