My son had a 12" sub in an enclosure in his trunk. You are correct, it is a space robber. It was a PITA to keep taking it out of the car to open the cargo hatch. Contrary to what Sig said, it actually sounded good--if window rattling bass is what you're after.
Myself, I just want to boost what's lost in an open air car. I've considered putting a flat sub under the rear seat, but really haven't explored that option other than just having a notion.
My other son added some small subs to his doors in his 9-3, and a low-frequency amp. That seemed to help in that car. The 9-3 is set up for it, a c900 would take some fabbing.
I've also seen at least one c900 vert with large speakers added to each side of the rear seat. That requires cutting the interior panels though.
