AC overpressure on charging - sanity check please. Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Sun, 31 May 2015 09:30:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The vert I bought last year has never had AC. It had paperwork indicating a shop had already converted it, so yesterday I diligently replaced the receiver/drier, and put my old (known good) compressor on the car along with all new o-rings. It held a vacuum nicely, so I kept it under vacuum (both high and low sides) using my AC manifold gauges for two hours.
Inside the car I pressed the AC on gauge with the fan on high (setting 3) and the extra fan immediately came on. Problem was, as soon as I started to charge the system, the gauge on the can went right into the red and stayed there. Same thing happened last year and I got distracted and never went back in to solve the puzzle.
Since the next item on the suction side is the expansion valve, is this the next component to replace? I am guessing it is jammed closed/fouled, so that the pressure bbuilds up in the short hose between the compressor and the valve. Makes me wonder if the shop that did the conversion actually cleaned out the R-12 oil from evaporator and condenser by flushing with mineral spirits.
Does this make sense to the brain trust?
