OK, just to close out the thread: Opened up the system and flushed the evaporator and condenser with mineral spirits to be sure that the previous retrofit was not the issue. Replaced the expansion valve per above hypothesis. Put a vacuum on it for 2.5 hours.
Started charging the system. Compressor clutch did not come on (as before), and pressure on the cheesy can gauge spiked very quickly (as before. Applied 12Volts to the blue wire on the compressor and the clutch kicked in, pressure declined and everything worked fine.
Jumped pin 30 and 87b at the relay to close the overheat relay, per trouble shooting guidance I found at the swedishwrench<dot>com. Nothing. Guide says tthat part of the circuit has something to do with fuse #29. In my car, there's a nasty bit of melted plastic in that slot and (apparently), that circuit was re-wired by the previous owner and epoxied into one of what would ordinarily be one of the spare fuse holders.
Gonna start there -- ARggghhh!
