I used the union/flare method to repair both brake lines running along the panel below the driver's door. You can get the patch lines at an auto parts store (I think I put in 8" patchs) but these aren't the flexible brake line material that Ray is talking about. Also most auto parts stores have free "rental" of the flaring tool. Both my union/flares leaked slightly after I installed them until I cranked them down; which I don't think is proper (if you do it expertly, I think the friction fit should be enough without cranking them down). After the original line rusted out and failed, the fluid leaked out in a flash and I then had ZERO brakes (my ebrakes were inoperable too). Lucky it was in the driveway when it happened (I like to slam down the brake pedal a few times upon first drive of the year -- this was the Winter beater -- to test for just this thing. So now I'm paranoid that the union/flare might fail, and wish I had made whole new lines out of Ray's "Nicopp" while I had the seats/carpet out. It's now a non-issue since I've decided to use this car as a parts car ('88 SPG) for my other SPG due to severe unibody rust problems. Which is a shame since it runs so freakin well.
