It works, maybe not as well as you'd like. Cheap dollar-store ATF is fine for helping purge a motor. I have a gallon or so used once that I may re-use someday. It didn't cost a small fortune.
I suggested it as a possible cure for a somehow plugged valve train oil gallery. I also suggested a squirt of compressed air. The guy tried the compressed air and cured his problem. Maybe the ATF would have worked, maybe not, who knows.
Actually before he re-posted I read Chris Myles's suggestion, that maybe he had cam bolts in the wrong places, and thought, HE's onto something, why didn't I think of that. Maybe that was really it but the owner said blowing air in an oil port did it.
You don't have to use ATF yourself but it's not a myth or a legend, it does have cleaning action and isn't going to ruin the motor. Let's keep the rhetoric respectful.
