Years ago, somewhere else, I mentioned that I was going to try and clean up and old engine with ATF and someone told me that was dumb, an old wives tale. I just so happened to be in the middle of some BMW-related fluid research and added ATF properties to my to-do list and came up with the same answer... the ATF trick is urban legend!
It's very strange how these tricks come to be and then get passed on - but I guess chalk up the magic properties of ATF with running high-octane fuel on cars not designed to use it, and building in backpressure to your exhaust system. One more hot rodder's myth totally debunked by science.
What I like particularly in that BITOG thread is that one guy who totally ignores the science and insists it works. It is literally an assertion of magic. Good times. :)
