Discovered LED dash bulbs Posted by TimN [Email] (#2379) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TimN) on Tue, 21 Jul 2015 05:39:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
While searching for electronic parts, I tripped over some LED bulbs for my '94 convertible 900 dash board illumination. They have several colors; I bought blue and also white but installed the blue LEDs for the coolness factor. The data sheet notes that the white ones are ~3x brighter. What stood out is that they are a direct replacement for the standard 12V bulb and only cost $1.28ea. And they have a current limiting resistor built in. Mouser.com (p/n 560-LE-0503-03W).
Bulbs access is easy through the vent/speaker cover on top. However, one bulb was stuck and I ripped the copper on the circuit sheet while removing it. Fortunately I had some silver circuit board paint and was able to fix the circuit. If I had been intelligent, I would have sprayed the sockets with electrical parts cleaner prior to trying to remove the bulbs.
LEDs have to be biased correctly. There is a + sign printed on the bulb. When the bulb is twisted in place the anode (+) goes on top.
We’ll see how these hold up.
