Right. I was thinking that the staggered teeth would be hard. That's what makes them quieter and stronger, though. HOWEVER, the rally gear set used in the fabled Stora Lådan gearboxes used by the rally team had a four-row, non-staggered primary gearset. I bet it was loud. I bet the rest of the box was also loud, with straight-cut gears and a pump and all that other rally jazz.
They say straight-cut gears are easier to machine, albeit a bit weaker than equivalent-sized helical cut gears. Perhaps we can think of the staggered teeth as a form of "helical cut" on the sprocket. Rally people use straight-cut gears because they are easier to do in small production runs, not because they are more durable. The noisy straight-cut rally gearsets we hear at races are more durable because they are beefier, and this makes up for them being straight-cut.
Interestingly, the commercially-available Saab Sport/Rally gearset is helical cut.
Idly thinking about it, why not use a Hy-Vo chain, like those used in 4WD transfer cases, for reproduction #8s? Easier to machine the gears! And the Hy-Vo chain was used in the T37 automatic anyway. Not too loud, and perhaps the most durable part of that transmission.
