Still haven't made the time to tear apart my dash to replace the HVAC blower fan. The latest thing to wear out on the car was the alternator. The warning light came on, Thursday, 50 miles from home, at night. I have to tell you, with all the stuff wrong with the car at this point, if I hadn't made it home, I was about ready to abandon it wherever it died. But it didn't, so I fixed it.
Mostly, this is a post about a quick and dirty repair. Instead of pulling the alternator (which I remember as a miserable and long job last time I did it) and taking it into a rebuild shop near my home, I just removed the two small screws that mount the regulator/brush assembly and took that in. The shop guy said he'd never seen a car where you could do that. (Saab wins again!) He sold me some no-name replacement at a name price, gave me some helpful advice for how to get it back in and off I went. Getting it back in, with a full set of brushes, is a little trickier than popping the old one out, but if you angle it in, in a scooping motion, you can get there. Other than using a long, thin screwdriver, and your fingers to make sure you don't drop the screws, I don't have any other helpful advice.
A $45 repair with under an hour's work is hard to beat. But, without polishing the contact rings on the rotor, or even being able to inspect them, I don't imagine I'm going to get a full service life out of the new brushes, but how bad do you think it will be? I don't plan on keeping this car running for more than another year. Of course, I've said that every year since I bought it, twice previously totaled and barely running, eight years ago, and if I can do the HVAC blower replacement, I might even spring for the CV joint installation, and do a little body work. Then, who knows?
