There will be some decreased service life from rough slip rings but it'll last for *years*. I've done that replacement on a few cars - one lasted for 60k miles (and would have gone longer if the car hadn't rotted away at 207k miles.).
eEuro has Bosch replacement voltage regulators for $32 and a more generic one for under $15. Wouldn't be a bad idea to get have a spare when you're buying parts from them somewhere down the line.
The warning sign for worn brushes getting down past their service limit is the battery light glowing when you start the car and only going off when you goose the throttle a bit. I learned to not ignore that warning the hard way - the car died in a heavy rainstorm a couple of hundred miles from home.
