I was inspired by your message. I thought I saw replacement brushes on the eEuroparts site a few days ago. I just went there now, and nope, they're gone (assuming that's where I saw them). So....
I started looking elsewhere, like eBay and Amazon, and nothing clearly specific was turning up, but there were a LOT of brushes available if you just go by size. So, I started measuring, and found something verrrry interesting.
I'd have to check my records, but that shop where I bought the overpriced no-name replacement regulator is the same one I had rebuild the alternator for either this car or the previous one. I've had this car for 8 years now, so I'm thinking it was most likely this one, and it was 5 or 6 years ago and about 30K miles ago (I'm a city dweller who doesn't drive much).
So, I got out my ruler, and lo and behold, the brushes seem undersized! Looks like they should be around 8mm x 5mm in cross-section, and these are only 7 x 5, and wobble around in the holders. Pretty effing shabby, no?
